Sable’s BIPOC Artist Fund

This fund is dedicated to providing funding for Sable artists who identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color. In the words of The BIPOC Project,

“We use the term BIPOC to highlight the unique relationship to whiteness that Indigenous and Black (African Americans) people have, which shapes the experiences of and relationship to white supremacy for all people of color within a U.S. context.” (https://www.thebipocproject.org/)

In keeping with the ethos of the term BIPOC, our fund guarantees a certain number of fully funded residencies for Black and Indigenous artists, in addition to a number of partially to fully funded residencies for other artists of color. Any and all additional funding goes towards the Fund for future seasons, and towards additional programming to support BIPOC artists at Sable.

The Sable Project has always been shaped by the artists, friends, and neighbors who come to share the land, their work, and a nourishing community. When one of our 2019 artists reached out about making a donation that would allow us to fund a month-long residency for an artist of color, we were inspired to take it one step further and created our BIPOC Artist Fund.

We have always had a commitment to accessibility, and have offered need-based scholarships for many seasons. This was clearly a new opportunity though, one that called on us to do better in supporting the artists in our community most impacted by racism & colonialism, and who are at the heart of a just future. And it fit perfectly with work we are doing to ensure that The Sable Project is guided by our values of Art, Environment, Community, and Collective Liberation.
