Sable Guest Artist Residencies

Applications now open!

These residencies are for professional individual artists or groups of artists looking for a shorter residency opportunity to work on a specific project, start a new creative endeavor, or put the finishing touches on a work. Guest Artists are asked to lead a workshop for their cohort of Sable Artists in Residence and/or participate in “Garden Time” (see below). Sable Guest Residencies range from 2-5 days in length.

Sable is off-the-grid! We live in the woods in Vermont’s Green Mountains. There is no electricity or wifi. See our About The Sable Project, Mission and Values, The Sable Land, and Sable’s Structures pages for more details.

What To Expect!

Artists arrive to Sable, get a tour of the land (check out all of Sable’s Structures), and pick out their tent platform. After moving in (artists are expected to bring their own tent and outdoor gear) and getting settled, all of the residents and Sable Team share a communal dinner. We will start orientation that evening and finish (along with Community Agreements) in the morning. (If your arrival date is later in the residency period, your orientation will be all the same day.)

ART: Days are very open-ended at Sable, and our residents have the entire Sable Land as their playground/studio for the duration of their stay. Sable can be a place to deepen your art practice, spark collaborations with fellow residents, and unplug from distractions in the way only living truly off-grid can offer. Each residency session will have an opportunity for residents to share their work with their fellow cohort members during an internal “Art Share.”

We invite Guest Artists to share a part of their artistic practice with the Summer Artists and other Guest Artists in their cohort. Guest Artist Workshops are a platform for exchange: you are welcome to share anything from your practice that is interesting/exciting for you, supports/furthers your creative practice in some way, and/or is something you think others would enjoy. It's an opportunity for artists from various disciplines and artistic lineages to learn from each other. If you choose to lead a workshop (which can be an activity, an experience, a conversation), The Sable Team will support your facilitation.

LAND: The Sable Land is beautiful, magical, and inspiring. We encourage exploring around the land, there is great swimming nearby, and naps in the field are encouraged!

Since the inception of Sable, an integral part of our residencies has been physical engagement with the communal spaces/land. These days, that looks like Garden Time! This consists of work in our gardens (to grow the food we eat!), and the occasional odd tasks around the land.  This time in the garden is a chance to learn some new skills, provides a nice break from your art practice, and is a great opportunity to spend time with your fellow Residents. Sable Guest Artists are welcome to participate in Garden Time instead of (or in addition to) leading a workshop. The choice is yours!

COMMUNITY: Sable is a uniquely community-oriented residency. All of our studio spaces are communally shared, and artists get to know and connect deeply with the other members of their cohort. Residents can also expect to spend time developing and showing off their cooking skills during our family-style dinners each evening. Guest Artists will be woven into the communal cooking, cleaning, and compost schedule for the time you are at Sable. Finally, each residency period culminates in our bi-weekly Food and Art Fridays public event, where artists are welcome (but not required) to share their work and connect with the local Vermont community.

Residency Fee & Deposit: $50/night per individual for Guest Artists. This contributes to the cost of food, general supplies, and infrastructure during your time at Sable. If accepted, you will be asked to send a $50 non-refundable deposit (which will count towards your residency fee) along with your final commitment.

There is a $10 application fee. Our application fee contributes to the cost of processing applications and planning our season. We also hope that it inspires potential applicants to pause and submit their best work. Please contact us at apply@thesableproject.org if you have any questions or concerns.

Sable’s BIPOC Artist Fund offers scholarships for Summer Artists and Guest Artists in Residence. If you are Black, Indigenous, and/or a Person of Color, you are eligible for a small scholarship! Make sure to check the box on the application.

It is important to us that Sable is accessible to all! No one will be turned away if you can't afford our residency fee.  Please contact us at apply@thesableproject.org to discuss financial aid.

PARTNERSHIP WITH VERMONT DANCE ALLIANCE

Vermont Dance Alliance logo - the silhouette of a dancer on a purple, orange, and pink color blocked parallelogram.

The Sable Project is partnering with Vermont Dance Alliance this year to provide a free Guest Artist Residency to one of VDA’s micro-grant recipients! Their Choreographer Seed Grants come with $500 - $1000 in funding, assistance with rehearsal space, multiple performance opportunities, and photo/video documentation. Deadline to apply is March 15.

Recipients of VDA’s micro-grants will be automatically considered for a Sable Guest Residency, but we encourage Vermont dance artists to apply to both programs!
