Sable Summer Residencies

Our various Summer Residency offerings are for adult artists of all ages and disciplines seeking space, time, and a place to focus on their art. We are specifically looking for artists confident in their creative processes, willing to work on solo projects, and comfortable living in community.

Our residents have the entire Sable Land as their playground/studio for the duration of their stay. Sable can be a place to deepen your art practice, form community, spark collaborations with fellow residents, and unplug from distractions in the way only living truly off-grid can offer. In each residency session there will be an opportunity for residents to share their work with their fellow cohort members and during our bi-weekly Food and Art Fridays public events.

In addition to copious time designated to creative work, Sable Artists can expect to spend time working in the gardens (see below), developing and showing off their cooking skills during our family-style dinners, or wandering around the land exploring. We have great swimming nearby and naps in the field are encouraged!

2024 Residency Dates:

  • June 6-16

  • June 20-30

  • July 4-14

  • July 18-28

2024 Application Deadlines:

*Note: While we have priority deadlines, applications are processed in the order they are received and applicants are accepted on a rolling basis, so apply early!

  • 1st priority deadline: March 1st

  • 2nd Priority Deadline: April 15th

Residency Fee:

$500 for 10 days. This fee contributes to the cost of food, general supplies, and infrastructure provided during your residency.

***NOTE*** Please take note of our BIPOC Artist Fund, which offers grants for Summer/Fall/Guest Artists in Residence. If you are Black, Indigenous, and/or a Person of Color, you are eligible for a fully or partially-funded residency! Make sure to check the box on the application.

In addition, all Sable Artists are expected to participate in 6 hours per week of work-trade. A part of our residency is physical engagement with the communal spaces/land. This consists of work in our partner Fat Dragon Farm’s gardens (on the Sable Land; to grow the food we eat!), and various work around Sable - which includes cooking and cleaning our communal spaces, and may include trail building, brush moving, small construction projects, or various other jobs.  These work times have been integral to life at Sable since our very beginning. They also provide a break from your art practice and are a good opportunity to spend time with your fellow Residents.

If accepted, you will be asked to send a $150 non-refundable deposit (which will count towards your residency fee) along with your final commitment.

It is important to us that Sable is accessible to all! No one will be turned away if you can't afford our residency fee.  Please contact us at apply@thesableproject.org for scholarship opportunities.
