Calliandra Marian Hermanson (she/her) is a printmaker and installation artist from Tucson, Arizona, currently living in Baltimore after having completed her MFA at the University of New Mexico.
While at Sable she was being inspired by the plant circumnutation patterns from Charles Darwin’s “The Power of Movement in Plants” and the 17th century microscopic plant illustrations from Nehemieh Grew’s “The Anatomy of Plants.” These both continue her research and interest in human-plant relationships and the history of botany and manifested as drawings, a linocut, a terrible metal engraving attempt and a strange musical experiment.
Books read at Sable:
The Light Eaters, Zoë Schlanger
Gideon the Ninth, Tamsyn Muir
Terra Incognita, Sara Wheeler
