Sonya (Sofia) Butseva (Guest Artist)

Sonya (Sofia) Butseva (she/her) is a multidisciplinary artist based between Montreal and the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. She works in various 3-D and 2-D mediums, from puppetry to sculpture, printmaking, and ceramics. Her creative work is centered in the intersections of storytelling and visual arts.

While at Sable, she worked on a series of illustrated ceramic tiles inspired by the old-time fiddle tunes she has picked up while in Vermont.

She spent lots of time chipping away at her project in the Kern shack, venturing out every now and then to join in on garden time, make beet soup for dinner, or do some fiddling at the picnic tables! Sonya also brought along a miniature puppet show, which she shared with Sable friends on the last day of her residency.

Fun fact: Sonya has a sweet, fluffy, pancake-loving dog named Fima (alias Mr. Feemy), who is her muse and often appears in her work. See if you can spot him!
